With ever-diminishing city space at a premium, revolutionary Finnish company Whim is showing the people of Birmingham extactly what could be achieved by taking just one car off our crowded streets.
The three-storey Tikku house, which measures just 2.5 metres by 5 metres and occupies the footprint of a single parking space, will be installed in Birmingham’s Brindleyplace Central Square from April 5-14 to celebrate Whim launching in the West Midlands. Originally designed and built in Finland for Helsinki Design Week, the house has a work area on the first floor, a bedroom upstairs, and a small greenhouse/living space at the top. Birmigham’s Tikku house will be dressed and styled using furniture from Finnish design masters, Artek, to add to the cool Nordic feel.
The diminutive dwelling also boasts a dry toilet and solar power, and while it has no running water or kitchen – it is perfect for the ultimate city dweller who enjoys easy access to the plethora of nearby bars, restaurants and cafes.
Whim, which goes live in the West Midlands on April 3, integrates journey planning, reservations, payments and subscriptions into one place.
The award-winning Whim service, which dovetails with the Swift travel card, delivers smarter transport solutions that will see people enjoying seamless travel options for less than the average monthly cost of running a car.
Commuters using Whim will be able to access a number of different modes of public transport including buses, trams and trains. Taxis, hire cars and bikeshare cycles are also included, either as part of a monthly fee or on a pay-as-you-go basis.
