Earth Day in Santa Barbara includes a City-Wide Celebration, Exhibitions, Clean Ups, and More!
Earth Day in Santa Barbara county includes a first-of-its-kind collaboration – “Impact: Climate Change & the Urgency of Now.” The project brings together more than a dozen museums, public gardens and historic sites with special environmental exhibits and more. Hosted by the Environmental Alliance of Santa Barbara County Museums, highlights include:
- “Whales Are Superheroes!” exhibits and events at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum exploring the vital role of whales in minimizing impacts of climate change
- “SuperArtificial,” a life-size garden made of upcycled plastic waste, an Innovation Wall and a Climate Change Globe displaying changing conditions around the world at MOXI, the Wolf Museum of Exploration and Innovation
- “The Science of Our Changing Planet,” an exhibit at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History that explains the science behind climate change
- “Take a Hike, Save the World,” an exhibit about local trails and public lands at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, plus new exhibits at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden showcasing how native plans can be solutions to the climate and biodiversity crisis
- Rosewood Miramar Beach will host a community beach clean up from 10 a.m. – noon on April 22.
- A new Earth Day Mural at Paseo Nuevo will be revealed during the Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival April 23, 2022.
In addition to the Earth Day celebrations, below are some other new nature and outdoors activities coming to Santa Barbara this spring and beyond:
- While spring wildflowers are blooming across the county, guests can see some larger-than-life 10-foot sunflower sculptures now through May 2022, “Sunflowers on State,” a new public art exhibition on State Street.
- On May 28, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History opens Rare Earth, which will feature exceptional gem, mineral, rock and fossil specimens. It also focuses on the societal, personal and historic value of these resources. Plus, the museum’s “Butterflies Alive!” exhibit returns for the season from May 28 through Labor Day, offering enchanting walks among fluttering butterflies.
- In June, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden opens The Backcountry, a four-acre outdoor space for families to play. Set alongside Mission Creek, the new interactive area features a fallen log obstacle course, waterfalls and hikes through various habitats, herb gathering, a maze and more.
